Life in Pictures: Borneo part 7
Our time at MESCOT was drawing to a close. We were being split up to stay with host families around Batu Putih that night, and would leave early the next morning. We still had some time to spare before the vans would arrive to take us to our host families, so we joined the village [...]

Life in Pictures: Borneo part 6
After our dance and the culture show, we piled into vans which were missing some upholstery but decorated quite nicely with such things as Pokemon stickers, and headed to the mountain you see above. Unfortunately, I can’t remember its name!! It was part of the national park system, I believe, and was some sort of [...]

Life in Pictures: Borneo part 5
After a brief breakfast, we packed up our jungle camp, hammocks and all, and headed back upstream back to MESCOT. As we were being loaded into our boat, Margarite slipped and fell in the mud, dragging one of our guides with her. He sank in nearly all the way to his knees! Here he is [...]

Mom Blog
Sorry I have been lax about posting the last couple of days — I’ve been working on a few other projects and haven’t had time to blog properly! Woe woe woe. However, my mother has started blogging! Now we know that the 21st Century is truly here. I suggested to my mom that she start [...]

Life in Pictures: Borneo part 4
The night that we spent in the hammocks was a mostly sleepless one for me. Between wrestling with my mosquito net and listening for elephants or wild boars, there just wasn’t much time to sleep. Some of the sounds we heard during the night included: -A cacophony of cicadas -An orchestra of frogs -Trumpeting elephants [...]

Easter Bilby
I got a chocolate rabbit for Easter today, but I also got a chocolate bilby. A bilby is a long-earred, brush-tailed bandicoot, a small marsupial critter native to Australia. There’s a movement here to eventually replace the Easter Bunny with the Easter Bilby. It’s not that there aren’t any rabbits here is Oz — it’s [...]

Life in Pictures: Borneo part 3
Still clad in orange lifejackets, we ventured into the great, green jungle. The first thing to do was make camp. We each carried in a hammock, which had to be strung up between a few trees, and then covered by a tarp. Our guides showed us how to do this — Elizabeth was lucky because [...]

Life in Pictures: Borneo (part 2)
We had arranged for a cab to pick us up from the Sabah Museum when it closed around 4 p.m., and headed back to the hotel. We still had a couple of hours before we were meeting the rest of our tour group, so we decided to do some last minute shopping. We had forgotten [...]

Give me a Hollywood accent, just for tonight
Australia is good. I bought a copy of Australian Writer’s Marketplace today, which should help me sell some work here. Hopefully. But tonight, I was out at a bar with some friends — a very trendy place, with local celebrities (i.e. Australian Rules Football players) out in full force — and for the first time [...]

Skippy the Bush Kangaroo part 2
Just a quick note to say that I had kangaroo for dinner. It was quite good — a bit like beef but with a slightly different flavor. The tail, however, was a bit gamy, probably because kangaroo tails are like 100% pure muscle. If you haven’t felt the tail of a live kangaroo before you [...]
